Discarded ashes from a wood-burning stove ignited in a detached garage Wednesday morning in the Delano neighborhood of west Wichita, authorities said.

The blaze was reported at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of South Elizabeth, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said. The person who called the fire in said a woman and child lived in the 20-by-20 foot garage converted into living quarters, but Battalion Chief Scott Brown said that information was incorrect.

Once they arrived on the scene of the fire, just north of Kellogg and between Seneca and Friends University, they learned it was a standard garage. The fire was quickly extinguished.

An investigation showed the fire started because the ashes were dumped into a plastic container, Brown said. Damage was set at $10,000.
