Woman injured in house fire near Pawnee and Hydraulic
A house fire in south Wichita hurt a woman who lives there early Thursday morning, authorities said.
The fire was reported just before 3:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Laura, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said. That’s southwest of Pawnee and Hydraulic.
The woman was taken to the burn unit of Via Christi Hospital St. Francis for treatment of smoke inhalation, Deputy Chief Tammy Snow said. She was treated and released from the hospital, a spokeswoman for St. Francis said.
Two people live in the three-bedroom house that was built in 1930. The Red Cross was called out to assist them.
Two fire trucks responding to the fire were blocked by a stopped train on Laura as they tried to reach the house, Snow said. They alerted 911, which then called for more engines to respond.
But the stopped train did not keep the delayed engines from reaching the house within the department’s goal of eight minutes, Snow said.
Fire crews found that an outside generator being used to provide power to the house had caught fire, she said. Those flames then spread to the house.
The fire caused an estimated $15,000 in damage to the house and its contents, he said.
