Police: Man with samurai sword holds father, roommate hostage

A man was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly held his father and roommate hostage with a samurai sword, police said.

The suspect’s roommate showed up for work Thursday morning and told his boss that his roommate had threatened to kill people and armed himself with the sword the night before, Wichita police Lt. Randy Reynolds said. Brandishing the sword, the man refused to let his 60-year-old father and 25-year-old roommate leave the house in the 800 block of South Red Oaks, near Webb and Harry.

The roommate said the 33-year-old man struck him with the sword, but eventually let him go to work. When officers arrived at the house, they learned the suspect had used the sword to destroy a stereo and computer system.

The roommate’s injuries were minor. The suspect was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.
