One killed in collision near K-254 and Webb Road (+video)
One person is dead after a collision between two vehicles near K-254 and Webb Road on Wednesday morning. Soon after, three other vehicles were involved in a separate accident near the investigators on the scene.
A 63-year-old woman from Kechi was in a small pickup when her vehicle was struck in the driver’s side door by a pickup driven by a 35-year-old man from Whitewater, according to authorities. The man was driving east on K-254. The woman’s pickup ended up in the grass median; she was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Lt. Roger Baughman with the Kansas Highway Patrol.
“Right now we don’t know for sure if she stopped at the stop sign or possibly just pulled out,” Baughman said.
The man said he was not injured in any way, Baughman said.
While investigating the fatal crash, three more vehicles crashed, he said. A 42-year-old man slowed down his vehicle when he saw the emergency lights. But he was hit from behind by a small red car driven by a 69-year-old man from Towanda. Then the red car was hit by a small blue vehicle driven by a 23-year-old woman from Towanda.
“When you see the flashing red and blue lights you have got to start slowing down before you get to the scene,” Baughman said. “We are out here working this accident and we heard the brakes, turn around and see this crash happen. It’s crazy. Flashing lights just mean slow down.”
The 42-year-old man who slowed down was the most seriously injured, according to Baughman, including head and probably chest injuries. The other two drivers may have had minor injuries but refused treatment, he said.
The first call to dispatch was placed at 8:14 a.m. according to Sedgwick County dispatchers.
Update: 1 confirmed fatality from the crash on K-254 / Webb Road.
