Officially, Martin Luther King Jr. Day isn’t until Monday, but this year, families can start the celebration early.

Palace West Theatre will offer a free showing Thursday of “Selma,” a movie about the 1965 Selma to Montgomery civil rights march. Before the movie, participants in the 1958 Dockum drugstore sit-in in downtown Wichita – one of the first successful lunch counter sit-ins in the country – and participants from recent college campus demonstrations will give a presentation on how they found the power to stand up and make a difference, according to a news release.

The movie and presentation are sponsored by The Community Voice, the Wichita Branch NAACP and Foulston Siefkin LLP.

Tickets are limited to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Up to two youth tickets are available with each adult ticket. Everyone who attends will receive a free serving of popcorn and a drink, the release said.

The event will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m at Palace West, 535 S. Ridge Road.

Tickets will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Register free online at eventbrite.com.
