A faulty furnace started a fire that caused an estimated $15,000 in damage to a house in south Wichita early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The furnace was in the attic of the house at 2542 S. Ellis, Wichita fire Lt. Joe Evans said. The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. in the two-bedroom house near Pawnee and Hydraulic.

The fire was confined to the attic, Evans said.

“You had to get inside to know there was a fire,” he said.

Crews needed less than a half-hour to extinguish the blaze, Evans said. A woman, a child and two pets were displaced from the house, which records show was built in 1951.

No injuries were reported.
