The state has set consumption guidelines for locally caught fish in Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment releases advisories about fish that should be eaten in small quantities or avoided altogether from local waters because of risk associated with contamination.

Here are the updated recommendations.

By location

▪ Kansas River: Do not eat bottom-feeding fish caught from Lawrence downstream to Eudora.

▪ Spring River: Do not eat shellfish caught from the confluence with Center Creek to the Oklahoma state line because of lead and cadmium.

▪ Shoal Creek: Do not eat shellfish caught from the Missouri state line to Empire Lake in Cherokee County.

▪ Cow Creek: Do not eat bottom-feeding fish caught from Hutchinson downstream to the confluence with the Arkansas River in Reno County.

▪ Arkansas River: Do not eat bottom-feeding fish from the Lincoln Street dam in Wichita downstream to the confluence with Cowskin Creek near Belle Plaine.

▪ Little Arkansas River: Limit consumption of bottom-feeding fish to one meal per month caught from the Main Street Bridge near Valley Center to the confluence with the Arkansas River in Wichita.

▪ Antioch Park Lake South in Overland Park: Do not eat any fish from the lake.
