Liberal man killed in head-on crash with Andover family

A Liberal man was killed Tuesday in a head-on crash in Seward County that involved a family from Andover, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

James C. McCourt Jr., 49, died at the scene of the accident on U.S. 54, about seven miles east of Liberal, the report said.

McCourt was driving a 1993 Subaru Justy westbound shortly before 4 p.m. Nicole D. Williams, 37, of Andover was eastbound in a 2006 GMC Yukon when she attempted to pass another vehicle and struck the Subaru on the westbound shoulder, the report said.

McCourt was ejected from the vehicle, according to the report.

Williams had five passengers – Nathaniel Williams Jr., 38; three boys ages 2, 5 and 7; and a girl 16. The 16-year-old was injured and taken to the Southwest Medical Center in Liberal. Nathaniel Jr. was also taken to the hospital with a possible injury, the report said.
