County approves grants for expanding adult day services

The Sedgwick County Commission has approved grant funding for expanding adult day service programs run by two local nonprofits.

The County Developmental Disability Organization will award $131,323 to the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation of Kansas. It will also give $71,211 toward the adult day services program run by Catholic Charities.

“We are near capacity in our adult day service programs, which primarily serves people on the intellectual and developmental disorder waiver,” said Patrick Jonas, CEO of the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation of Kansas.

The two groups applied for the grants after the county sought providers who wanted to serve more people. The county sent out its request in September.

“The programs will increase day support capacity for the medically fragile and elderly by 40 individuals,” according to a county board of bids and contracts document.

The grant money will fund more space for daily live skills and learning programs at the cerebral palsy foundation. The expansion will also serve as a tornado shelter for the main facility.

Catholic Charities plans to use its funds to lease more space for programs.

“Catholic Charities appreciates the support of the county as we continue plans to expand our services for adults with disabilities and seniors,” the group’s executive director, Mike Burrus, said in a statement.
