Man found shot to death near Harry and Hillside

Police are seeking leads in the fatal shooting of a man in a fourplex in southeast Wichita.

Someone called 911 shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday and said police needed to check on an unconscious man at a residence in the 2600 block of East Wilma, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said Thursday.

“After stating this, the caller hung up” and dispatchers were unable to make further contact with them, Ojile said. Officers who arrived at the fourplex near Harry and Hillside looked through the windows and spotted a man lying on the floor.

They forced their way inside and found that the 42-year-old man had received “numerous gunshot wounds,” Ojile said. The victim, who lives in Wichita, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He had been staying in the residence for the past few days with an acquaintance who lives there.

“Investigators have been working through the night interviewing several other people” but they have no leads or suspects at this point, Ojile said. The people who live there have been ruled out as suspects, he said.

It is thought the victim, whose name has not yet been released, was shot several hours before he was found.

This is the 31st homicide of the year in Wichita, Ojile said.
