Girl critically injured when semi collides with turning van in north Wichita
A 7-year-old girl remains in critical condition after she was hurt in a two-vehicle collision in north Wichita on Thursday morning, police said.
The girl was one of four passengers in a van that turned left from Broadway onto 37th Street North at 7:34 a.m., Wichita police Capt. Jeff Weible said. The van was struck by a southbound semi.
The girl was taken to Via Christi Hospital-St. Francis.
“Doctors are optimistic she is going to survive her injuries, but the next several hours are going to be critical,” Weible said.
A 12-year-old girl was also hurt and taken to a hospital, he said, but her injuries were minor.
Another semi was waiting to turn east at the time of the collision, Weible said, and that may have created obstructed views at the intersection. Two teenagers and the driver of the van escaped injury in the collision.
The Critical Accident Review Team is on the scene “putting the pieces of the puzzle together,” Weible said.
