KBI investigating Halstead Police Department

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the Halstead Police Department, according to the Harvey County Attorney.

“It is an ongoing investigation,” said David Yoder, Harvey County Attorney. “There are still witnesses to interview and possibly documents to examine.”

Yoder said he would not comment on the investigation because the KBI has not yet completed it.

“I certainly don’t want to bring any names up or discuss any issues at this point,” he said. “If the investigation determines there’s no legal action to be taken, I don’t want anybody’s names or legal agencies to be questioned.”

Agents from the KBI visited the Halstead Police Department for the first time on Monday, Yoder said, but the investigation has been going on “for a short period of time.”

The KBI sent a news release Tuesday confirming that it was investigating “in and around Halstead, Kansas,” without specifically mentioning the police department.

“No search warrants have been served and no arrests have been made in the investigation,” the release said.

Yoder said he would alert the media when there is an update in the investigation. The KBI said in its news release that it would not comment further.

A message left with Halstead’s police chief, Steve Lewis, was unanswered Tuesday afternoon.

An officer who answered the phone at the Halstead Police Department said it could not release any details about the investigation at this time.

A Facebook page for the department, which was visible and operational as of 3 p.m., was not accessible by 4:45 p.m. The page read, “Sorry, this content isn’t available right now.
