Pedestrian, 71, critical after being struck by car near 45th and Hydraulic

A 71-year-old man remained in critical condition Thursday after being struck by a car as he was walking along 45th Street North on Wednesday morning, police said.

The victim was walking east on the edge of 45th when he was hit by an eastbound car shortly before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a police document. The 29-year-old driver told police she was “distracted by something inside vehicle” and “didn’t see what she had struck,” Sgt. Stephen Patton said.

She drove home and told her husband she had hit something, so he retraced her route and found the man lying next to the road less than a mile from their house, Patton said. A police report indicated he was found in the 2400 block of East 45th North, east of Hydraulic.

The man was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment, where he was in critical condition on Thursday afternoon. He may have been next to the road for a half hour before being found, Patton said.

The case will be presented soon to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine what charges, if any, will be filed, Patton said.
