UPDATE: Teen struck, injured while walking at McLean and Lincoln
A 15-year-old pedestrian was taken to a hospital for treatment after she was hit by a vehicle Monday morning, authorities said.
The accident occurred at 7:38 a.m. at Lincoln and McLean, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatch supervisor said. The girl was transported to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis complaining of facial pain.
A Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Lincoln when it slowed and turned north onto McLean, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said. The jeep had the green light, witnesses told police.
Espinoza said he did not know if the teen was distracted by a cellphone or headphones. It was also not clear if the “walk” sign was lit for pedestrians at that time.
The girl was thrown an estimated 5 feet and had road rash, according to first responders communicating with the hospital via emergency radio traffic. Her injuries were not considered critical, the dispatch supervisor said.
The girl is in the 11th grade at West High School, said Susan Arensman, a spokeswoman for the Wichita school district.
The “student reported feeling okay but is being transported to the hospital as a precaution,” Arensman said in an e-mail response to questions.
Her mother was with her when she was transported.
