Child abuse investigated in 5-month-old suffering from brain bleeds

Wichita police are investigating a case of suspected abuse of a 5-month-old girl suffering from brain bleeds who was taken to the hospital Friday.

The baby was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph at about 3 p.m. by her parents, who said that she had been having seizures and vomiting for three days, police Sgt. Brian Sigman said Saturday. Hospital staff found one brain bleed and then several others that had occurred over a period of time and called 911, Sigman said. The baby was transferred to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis.

The parents – a 26-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman – were questioned by detectives, Sigman said. A 4-year-old girl who also lived at the family’s residence was taken into police protective custody, Sigman said.
