More Oklahoma earthquakes shake southern Kansas

Late Friday afternoon, Wichita was again shaken again by an earthquake.

Preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey showed the quake was about 4.1 magnitude and was centered just south of the Oklahoma/Kansas state line, approximately 9 miles southwest of Caldwell. The quake was felt over a broad area and shook buildings in the Wichita area.

The 4:40 p.m. quake was almost immediately followed by two more near the same location, a 3.1 quake at 4:53 p.m. and a 3.9 quake at 4:55 p.m.

The USGS was still gathering and analyzing data and it was not immediately known whether Friday’s earthquake was its own event or an aftershock of the 4.7 magnitude quake that shook Wichitans awake in the early morning hours Thursday.

Rob Williams, a quake expert with the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center, had warned that northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas could expect a series of aftershocks and even possibly a larger earthquake following Thursday’s quake, which was centered about 8 miles southwest of Cherokee, Okla.
