Police: Four children in protective custody after father, grandmother can’t take care of them

Four children under the age of 11 are in protective custody after first their father and then their grandmother decided they could not take care of them, police said.

Their 55-year-old grandmother dropped the children — a 10-year-old girl, an 8-year-old girl, a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl —- off at St. Joseph Community Services at 4155 E. Harry at about 11 a.m. Monday, Lt. James Espinoza said.

The woman told an employee there she was unable to take care of the children, who had been dropped off by their homeless, unemployed father the previous Friday “with only the clothes on their backs,” Espinoza said.

The children were taken to the Wichita Children’s Home. Police are looking for the 43-year-old father, Espinoza said.

“We want to keep families together” when possible, he said.
