Police: Abuse suspected as 8-week-old girl hospitalized in critical condition

An 8-week-old Wichita girl is in “extremely critical condition” at a Kansas City hospital as a result of suspected child abuse, police said Monday.

The child was not breathing when she was brought from an apartment in the 1000 block of North Market to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis at about 4 p.m. on Nov. 9, Wichita police Lt. Todd Ojile said. The parents told doctors the baby had simply stopped breathing.

Doctors initially thought a medical condition was to blame, Ojile said. She was transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City the next day.

“Testing on the child has shown child that the child had numerous traumatic injuries and that the hospital believed it was child abuse,” Ojile said.

Detectives have spoken to the parents — a 28-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman — and doctors in Kansas City and are monitoring the situation, he said. No arrests have been made in the case.
