Shots fired near Lincoln and I-135; five teens in car escape injury

Police are still trying to sort out why several shots were fired on a Wichita street late Saturday night.

A 37-year-old man reported hearing noise and then shots fired at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday in the 1300 block of South Ellis, Lt. James Espinoza said. That’s southwest of Lincoln and I-135.

Officers responding to the area found a vehicle with five girls inside ranging in age from 15 to 18, Espinoza said. None of them were hurt, he said, but officers found shell casings in the street.

Officers were told “several different stories” about what prompted the shooting, Espinoza said, so the investigation is ongoing.
