Pedestrian struck on Seneca on Saturday dies

A pedestrian who was struck while crossing the street late Saturday night has died.

John Ritthaler, 38, died at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lt. John Espinoza said. He had been in critical condition since he was struck by a van while crossing McCormick at Seneca at about 11 p.m. Saturday.

He was in a crosswalk while the “walk” light was activated, police have said. The driver of the northbound van on Seneca told police he was looking for a business and did not see the pedestrian on the south side of the intersection.

Ritthaler was struck in the inside lane of northbound traffic as he walked west, police have said.

The case has not yet been presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, Espinoza said.
