Pedestrian struck by van Saturday night remains critical

A man struck by a vehicle while he was crossing the street late Saturday night remains in critical condition at a local hospital, police said.

The 36-year-old man was using the crosswalk to go west from the southeast corner of Seneca and McCormick when he was struck by a van driving north on Seneca at about 11 p.m. Saturday, Lt. James Espinoza said. The pedestrian was crossing legally and the van ran a red light as it struck him, he said.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the collision, Espinoza said.

“Just his inattentiveness,” Espinoza said of the driver. “He was looking for a business in the area.”

The pedestrian was hit in the inside lane for northbound traffic on Seneca, Espinoza said. The 39-year-old driver stopped and rendered aid to the pedestrian, who was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis for treatment of injuries to his head and torso.

No charges have been filed, Espinoza said, but the case remains under investigation.
