Rollover accident injures six on K-254

Two vehicles, including a Ford Expedition carrying 11 people, were involved in a rollover accident at the Sedgwick-Butler county line Saturday night.

Six people were taken to hospitals and released, said Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet.

The accident happened at about 9 p.m. Emergency personnel from Butler and Sedgwick counties responded to the accident.

The 78-year-old Wichita driver of a 1997 Mercury Sable was eastbound on Kansas 254 at the county line, also called 159th Street, when he used the turnaround to head in the opposite direction.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, failed to yield the right of way to the Expedition, Herzet said.

The Expedition rolled and was upside-down and the Sable was in the traffic lane for westbound traffic when officers arrived, Herzet said.

The passengers in the Expedition, most of them family, were from Eureka, he said. They were heading to Wichita to visit a family member in the hospital when the accident occurred. They range in age from 3 to 50.

Five were taken to Wichita hospitals, where they all were treated and released.

The driver of the Sable was also taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
