Investigators need to talk to the mother who was injured in last week’s fatal fire on South Water to help them determine the cause, Wichita fire Capt. Kelly Zane said Friday.

So far that hasn’t been possible because the 27-year-old woman remains in critical condition in the hospital, he said.

Her 3-year-old son, who also was injured in the Nov. 12 fire, has been released to another facility for care, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The mother’s 9-year-old son, Jaden Nunn, died in the fire at 1343 S. Water. Fire broke out about 4 a.m. in the family’s second-floor apartment in the two-story house.

There was extensive damage to the upstairs apartment in the 114-year-old frame house, making it difficult to determine the cause, Zane said.

“We’ve got it sorted through and found a lot of things,” he said, “but the mother is the only person who would be able to tell us anything.

“Otherwise, (the cause) probably will be undetermined.”
