ATV crash kills child near Augusta

An all-terrain-vehicle crash near Augusta left a child dead Saturday.

Butler County sheriff’s Lt. Patrick Light said emergency crews received a 911 call about the accident at around 3:35 p.m. When they arrived in the 9000 block of Southwest Diamond Road, Light said, they found a boy in a field “with serious injuries” and transported him to Kansas Medical Center in Andover.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital, he said. He was the driver of the ATV, Light said. No one else was hurt.

Light would not give the child’s age or any information about what prompted the crash. A Butler County dispatcher said the child was unresponsive when he was found.

The cause of the crash “is still under investigation,” Light said. He expected more details, including the boy’s name and age, to be released Monday.
