A 62-year-old woman going for a morning walk near her rural Sedgwick County home was struck and killed by a student heading to school Friday morning, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 7:13 a.m. at 31600 W. 31st St. South, Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said. That’s a gravel intersection of South 311th Street West and 31st Street South, west of Lake Afton between Garden Plain and Cheney.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old boy on his way to classes at Garden Plain High School, was driving east on 31st Street South when his small, blue, four-door Saturn struck the woman, Dehning said. Emergency responders tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not yet been released by authorities. Both the victim and the driver live in the area, Dehning said.

The accident occurred before sunrise, but after the first rays of dawn were visible on the horizon, weather officials said. The driver stayed on the scene and has been cooperative with investigators, Dehning said.

Investigators are looking into where the victim was walking on the road at the time of the accident. The Kansas Highway Patrol is assisting the sheriff’s office with the investigation.
