Police: Man pulls trigger, accidentally shoots teen in elbow

At first she said she was hit by a stray bullet while walking down the street Monday night.

After officers told the 17-year-old girl that the evidence didn’t support her story, she said she was shot in the elbow when somebody dropped a gun and it fired when it hit the floor.

When officers went to the apartment where she said it happened Monday night, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said, they found a 35-year-old man who told them he had picked up a gun he thought was unloaded and pulled the trigger. The bullet went through a living room wall at an apartment in the 1900 block of South Hiram – near Meridian and Pawnee – and struck the teen in her elbow.

She was taken to a hospital for treatment. The case has been classified as a home accident, Espinoza said.
