Man hit by city bus in Planeview still critical (+video)
A 75-year-old man remains in critical condition Wednesday, a day after being run over by a city transit bus in Planeview.
Hai Huynh had been talking with a motorist near Cessna and Roosevelt shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said. The bus was driving north on Roosevelt and halted at a stop sign at the T intersection with Cessna.
As the bus turned left onto Cessna, it struck Huynh, who was still standing in the road near the north curb west of the intersection after the other motorist drove away, Espinoza said. The bus knocked Huynh down and then ran over “his lower extremities,” Espinoza said.
The pedestrian, who lives in Planeview, was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment.
“We are still investigating this,” Espinoza said. “The driver of the bus is being cooperative with us.”
The 51-year-old driver is currently on leave, city officials said. She has been driving a transit bus for the city since 1996.
There were 10 passengers on the bus at the time of the collision, Espinoza said. Police have talked to nine of them and would still like to talk to the 10th. That passenger left the scene before officers arrived, saying he was late for work.
“We just want to make sure we have all our bases covered,” Espinoza said of law enforcement’s interest in talking to the 10th passenger.
The passenger is being asked to call Detective Brian Mock at 316-268-4682.
“A very tragic thing happened yesterday,” Espinoza said.
