Honor guard competition in Wichita includes 21-gun salutes (+video)

You might have heard gunfire Monday afternoon in northwest Wichita.

No cause for alarm, authorities said: 10 honor guards from across Kansas were practicing their 21-gun salutes.

The honor guards were competing for a traveling trophy as part of training that took place all day Monday at the Sedgwick County Extension Service at 21st and Ridge Road, Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning said in a statement.

The loudest part of the training was from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard hosted the training. Opening ceremonies began Monday with a U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard. The training concluded with closing ceremonies with bagpipes.
