Car chase ends in Kingman County with teen’s death
A 15-year-old girl died Sunday following a car chase that began in Pratt County but ended in Kingman County.
Rebecca Vandermerwe was driving a 2013 Toyota Highlander with an Oklahoma license plate when law enforcement authorities noticed she was driving erratically, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The accident happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. at the exit ramp of U.S. 54 and 170th Avenue, about a quarter-mile south of Cunningham.
When authorities tried to pull Vandermerwe’s vehicle over, she sped off, with speeds reaching more than 100 mph. At 170th Avenue, she exited but lost control as her vehicle went down the shoulder of the exit ramp and rear-ended the trailer of a semi truck. The driver of the truck was not injured.
