Sedgwick County Zoo hosts annual Zoobilee fundraiser

The Sedgwick County Zoo was set to welcome near-sell-out crowds on Saturday night for its annual Zoobilee fundraiser, officials said.

The zoo was closed Saturday, the only day of the year it closes, to prepare for the event, its largest fundraiser.

Steve Onken, the zoo’s development director, estimated around 5,300 to 5,400 people showing up on Saturday.

“I think we’re going to raise some good money tonight,” he said. “Ticket sales were very strong. We’re just blessed with everyone’s support of the zoo.”

The event, which is known as “Wichita’s wildest fundraiser,” Onken said, had 47 places listed on its website as serving food at the event – from local establishments like Gianni Bacci’s to national chains like Fazoli’s.

The event features a silent and a live auction, and provides people the opportunity to roam the zoo’s grounds after dark – with a glass of wine in hand.

“It’s just a chance for us big people to enjoy a night at the zoo,” Onken said. “It’s like a backyard garden party.”

Various local bands are playing at the event, including the Lucky People Band, Mudbugs Cajun & Zydeco Band and Soul Injection.

People who waited to purchase tickets until late paid $150 per ticket.

The money that is raised from Zoobilee will go toward the zoo’s operational expenses, Onken said.

“It’s a community spirit thing – people know it goes to a worthy cause,” he said. “They enjoy participating and being a part of the fun.”

The event is scheduled to run until midnight, and Onken said there are a few faithful attendees who usually stay until the last minute, “dancing under the stars.”
