Traffic enforcement crackdown yields nearly two dozen DUI arrests
Local law enforcement officers arrested nearly two dozen people for driving under the influence and issued more than 220 speeding tickets during a two-week crackdown on dangerous driving that ended on Labor Day.
The Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office were among more than 150 law enforcement agencies across Kansas that engaged in a special project to remove drunk, drugged, and other dangerous drivers from the roadways between Aug. 20 and Sept. 7.
Wichita police issued 222 speeding tickets and issued 224 citations for seat belt violations. Nineteen people were arrested for driving under the influence. A total of 185 citations were written for other moving violations.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested four people for driving under the influence and 10 other people were arrested for driving while suspended, outstanding warrants or other criminal violations. Deputies also wrote 14 seat belt or child safety restraint violation tickets. Another 64 traffic citations were issued during the two-week operation.
Statistics from the Kansas Highway Patrol have not been released.
