A man was found dead downtown on Monday morning after Wichita police responded to a call of a man down.

Sgt. Brian Sigman said officers received the call at 7:30 a.m. and found the man near the northwest corner of Topeka and Second Street.

Sigman said the man appears to be in his late 50s and is thought to be homeless.

He said the man’s death doesn’t appear to be suspicious.

“It’s not going to be a homicide investigation,” Sigman said.

He said shortly before police arrived, witnesses reported another man taking personal items from the body.

Sigman said a Sedgwick County EMS crew detained the man until police arrived.

Police found the victim’s cellphone and credit card on the man EMS detained, and he was taken into custody on suspicion of theft, Sigman said.
