Workshop to aid families with Swedish ancestry in research

Registration is now being taken for a Swedish genealogy workshop in Lindsborg.

Although the workshop is not until Sept. 26-27, participants are encouraged to get their reservations in early, according to Lorna Nelson, director of the McPherson County Old Mill Museum in Lindsborg.

The workshop includes opportunities to work with genealogists from Sweden. The specialists discuss finding Swedish records online, burial customs and cemeteries, the best ways to find living relatives in Sweden, estate inventories, historic maps and military records.

Speakers include Geoffrey Morris, a Swedish research expert with FamilySearch from Salt Lake City. He teaches how to read Gothic-style handwriting.

A second speaker will be Michael Peterson from Tioga, Texas, who was chosen last year to compete on “Allt for Sverige,” a Swedish television series that each season places 10 Swedish-Americans in Sweden to learn about their culture and family history while competing for a reunion with Swedish relatives.

Four computer lab sessions will be offered during the workshop, and some of the guest speakers will be on hand to help guide attendees in their research.

To register, contact the McPherson County Old Mill Museum or call 785-227-3595 for more information.
