Local law enforcement agencies are taking part in a statewide campaign to crack down on drunken driving through Labor Day weekend.
The annual “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose” campaign is being financed by a Kansas Department of Transportation grant, which pays law enforcement overtime to work extra shifts patrolling streets, freeways and highways. They’ll be paying special attention to impaired driving, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza said.
The campaign began Thursday and continues through Sept. 7.
Kansas averages four people injured every day and one person killed every three days in impairment-related crashes, according to information released by KDOT. Those involved in impairment-related crashes are about twice as likely to be injured and almost six times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than those involved in a crash in which alcohol or drugs are not determined to be a factor.
