Starting next week, the city of Wichita will limit parking lot and trail access near the Keeper of the Plains as construction crews begin work on a series of improvements to the landscape near the Keeper’s parking lot, on the north side of the Little Arkansas River.

The work will see the construction of a new retaining wall as well as improvements to pedestrian accessibility, drainage and irrigation systems nearby the parking lot by Nims and Central, Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said at the city’s weekly media briefing.

Wu said the work near the Wichita landmark will not include improvements to the parking lot itself, but that city staff are “aware of existing issues” and are evaluating options for repairs there.

Additionally, a temporary asphalt path will be built so that pedestrians can continue to access the river and the Keeper. Some other portions of the trail near the river will be closed during most of the construction, which will last until November.
