The city of Wichita is warning residents to not trim or cut trees on city property after video began circulating of a partygoer trimming tree branches at Sunday’s World Cup watch party.

Monday morning, a Wichita Eagle reporter verified the video by going to the downtown park and noticed branches that had been recently cut and a pile of small limbs set aside on a nearby sidewalk.

Video circulating on TikTok showed this tree being trimmed during Sunday’s Mexico v. England World Cup match.

The video in question said the branches were in the way of the screen at the park showing the Mexico v. England game.

“Trees in our parks are public assets that enhance the park experience for all visitors, and any pruning or maintenance is performed by authorized City staff,” city spokesperson Tyler Schiffelbein said.

City ordinance strictly prohibits unauthorized cutting or alteration of trees on city property.

People found in violation of the ordinance can receive a $200 fine, along with paying for damages or having to repair, replace or remove the tree themselves.

Watch parties at Naftzger Park, hosted by the city, have been incredibly popular, drawing in hundreds of spectators.

“We appreciate the community’s enthusiasm for the FIFA watch parties at Naftzger Park and want everyone to enjoy the events safely and responsibly,” Schiffelbein said in an email.

The city said it will continue to have law enforcement on site at the watch parties, including Monday’s USA vs. Belgium match.

“We encourage all visitors to respect public property and report any concerns to on-site law enforcement,” Schiffelbein said.
