City-owned public golf courses in Wichita closed. Here’s why
The four city-owned public golf courses in Wichita were closed Friday following significant rainfall in the area.
According to a post on the city’s website, the Arthur B. Slim, Auburn Hills, MacDonald, and Tex Consolver courses were closed due to “significant flooding.”
Holden McDaniel, an employee at the Arthur B. Slim course, said a lot of areas of standing water remained at the course early Friday afternoon. He said the No. 18 hole was also flooded.
In its online post, the city said multiple areas at the four courses were impassable Friday morning.
City officials will continue to assess the situation, the post said.
“Our team is assessing conditions and will provide updates as soon as it is safe to reopen for play,” the city said. “Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
Wichita recorded its second-highest June daily rainfall total in history on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
Andy Kleinsasser, a meteorologist in the weather service’s Wichita office, said that 5.31 inches of rain fell Thursday in west Wichita. That amount has been eclipsed only by the 6.82 inches of rain that fell in Wichita on June 8, 1923.
Across the Wichita metro area and just outside it, anywhere from 4 inches to 7 inches were recorded from the storm swath that hit Thursday night into Friday, Kleinsasser said.
