Are more weekend closures coming for I-135, Kellogg interchange? What we know
More closures are expected as part of the I-135 and Kellogg interchange improvement project until at least the end of 2027.
When those closures will happen isn’t known yet, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.
“Additional information will be provided as project schedules and traffic control plans are updated and refined as needed,” KDOT spokesperson J.B. Wilson said in an email.
Last weekend, Kellogg where it spans I-135, I-135 underneath the Kellogg overpass, and associated ramps were closed as part of a redeck project.
Travelers were rerouted to avoid the closures, causing heavier than usual traffic on surrounding roads.
More intermittent closures are expected, according to KDOT.
“Throughout construction, intermittent lane and ramp closures on I-135 between Lincoln Street and Douglas Avenue, U.S. 54 between Hillside Street and Topeka Street, and nearby connecting ramps are anticipated,” Wilson said.
KDOT also did not rule out more weekend closures like last weekend’s.
“... [F]uture weekend closures may be necessary as construction progresses, including during beam installation activities and when traffic is shifted to the newly constructed southbound I-135 to eastbound U.S. 54 ramp,” Wilson said. “These closures would facilitate construction activities and removal of the existing ramp.”
The improvement project includes “bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation, and construction of a new ramp from southbound I-135 to eastbound U.S. 54.”
The more than $23 million project began late last year.
