It’s Memorial Day weekend, which usually means Wichita’s public pools open for the season. But that’s not the case this year.

The city announced Friday morning through a city newsletter that pools will open on a “rotating schedule” until at least mid-June. That means only Aley, College Hill, Harvest and McAfee pools will be open from 1-5 p.m. on Monday, Memorial Day. Minisa and Orchard will not be open that day but will open Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the city said it was facing a severe lifeguard shortage.

“Wichita Park & Recreation is continuing to hire and train lifeguards with the goal of moving to a full daily schedule at all six public pools by mid-June,” the city newsletter said.

The city posted the schedules for its pools for the first two weeks of the season on its website. The newsletter encouraged residents to check the pool schedules before visiting. The schedule for the next two weeks shows each pool open several days a week.

“During this time, all six pools will not be open simultaneously,” the city website reads.

All the city’s splash pads, excluding Fairmount Park, will be open for the season by Memorial Day, according to the city website. Fairmount is closed due to maintenance. Splash pad hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Admission to city pools is $3. Splash pads are free.
