Wichita drivers, get ready to face back-to-back ramp closures on the Canal Route

Drivers heading south on I-135 in Wichita will be affected by back-to-back ramp closures starting Monday as the city carries out manhole reconstruction work and the state works on an ongoing bridge replacement project.

Beginning April 20, the southbound exit to Pawnee will close. The ramp will remain unavailable for about a week, during which crews will repair infrastructure beneath the interstate, the Kansas Department of Transportation said in a news release.

After that initial phase of work, the ramp will reopen to a single lane while additional pavement repairs are done. Full access to the ramp, KDOT said, is anticipated roughly a week later.

The next ramp south on I-135, the exit to K-15, has been closed for months as part of a separate KDOT bridge replacement project. That closure, which began in October 2025, is expected to remain in place through December.

Additional roadwork updates can be found on the KDOT website.
