An Emporia man is dead after a two-vehicle collision early Thursday.

The crash happened about a mile and a half west of Marion in Marion County, a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol read. 32-year-old Gregory Campbell of Emporia was driving west on US-56 just before 6 a.m. Thursday morning when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck an eastbound Freightliner semi-truck head-on.

Campbell, the sole occupant of the westbound 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, died from his injuries. The 51-year-old semi-truck driver from Longford, Kansas, reportedly complained of pain but was not hospitalized, the highway report said.

After the crash, the Chevy came to rest in the ditch while the semi overturned, blocking U.S. 56. The roadway between Kansas 256, about a mile west of Marion, and U.S. 77, about two miles east of Marion, was closed due to the collision and is scheduled to reopen around 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Updates on roadway closures can be found on the KanDrive website.
