Person found dead as crews put out fire along river in south Wichita

One person was found dead as crews worked to extinguish a fire along the Arkansas River in south Wichita overnight, the Wichita Fire Department says.

The fire was reported shortly before midnight Wednesday in the area of 37th Street South and Broadway.

Fire Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz said firefighters found the person’s body “during extinguishing efforts.”

“At this time WFD and WPD (Wichita police) are working together with the investigation,” he said by email.

Wichita police spokesman Andrew Ford said the person had burns and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No identifying information about the victim was immediately released.
