Ramps closed on I-135 in Wichita over the weekend. Here’s where & what to expect
Several closures scheduled for I-135 will affect drivers in north Wichita through the end of the month.
Northbound I-135 just past the eastbound K-96 ramp will be closed from 7 p.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday so workers can place a concrete safety barrier, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. Drivers will detour by taking eastbound K-96 to Hillside, exiting the highway and getting back on K-96 using the westbound on-ramp. After that, they’ll return to northbound I-135, KDOT said in a news release.
Several ramps will also be closed from 5 a.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Monday, KDOT said. They include the 21st Street on- and off-ramps to northbound and southbound I-135, the westbound K-96 to northbound I-135 ramp and the northbound I-135 on-ramp at 29th Street North.
The northbound I-135 on-ramp at 21st Street is also closed for preparation work ahead of the full ramp closures over the weekend, according to KDOT.
Ongoing intermittent lane closures for bridge redecking are also affecting northbound and southbound I-135 at 101st Street North.
Other closures impacting traffic on I-135 include:
- Lane closures on northbound I-135 just north of the K-96 ramp for bridge inspection work tied to last weekend’s train derailment that damaged bridge columns.
- A left shoulder closure on the eastbound Kellogg exit ramp to northbound I-135 scheduled to continue through late April.
- A left lane closure affecting both directions of I-135 between Lincoln and Douglas. Speed is reduced to 50 mph in the area. Construction is scheduled to continue through next fall.
- The northbound I-135 ramp to westbound Kellogg is closed for bridge construction through September 2027.
- The southbound I-135 ramp from 29th Street North is also closed for extended reconstruction as part of the North Junction Gold Project, Phase 2B, which includes a new direct connection from northbound I-235 to eastbound K-96 and new ramps for westbound K-96 at I-135. Work is expected to wrap up in 2028.
