Severe weather forecast in Wichita area. Here is a look at timing, concerns
Severe weather is possible in the Wichita area Friday night, with the highest concern east of the metro area.
The National Weather Service in Wichita says there is more concern of severe weather with this storm than the one that hit the area Thursday night and Friday morning.
“This second round of storms will have a greater risk for severe weather,” the NWS in Wichita said. “Large hail, damaging winds, locally heavy rainfall, and a chance for a strong tornado will all be possible.”
Storm officials were out Friday assessing a tornado or tornadoes that hit west-central Sumner County in Thursday’s storm, which reportedly caused damage to an outbuilding and headstones in a cemetery and threw around “100 round bails” of hay, according to Mick McGuire, a NWS Wichita meteorologist.
Wichita only saw strong wind gusts from that storm. The highest was 50 mph at 2:26 a.m.
Friday’s wind gusts were reaching around 40 mph by afternoon. The concern for severe weather Friday is between 4-10 p.m.
