Speed suspected in deadly car, semi collision near Wichita gas station

Wichita police believe speed may have been a factor after a man was killed in a car crash Monday morning when his vehicle collided with the back of a semi.

The crash happened near the Love’s Travel Stop in the 1500 block of East 21st Street around 7:10 a.m.

A tractor-trailer semi was disabled along the 21st Street, according to a press release published by the Wichita Police Department. Witnesses told police that while the semi was parked, a white Ford Focus hatchback crashed into the back of the truck at a high rate of speed, according to Sedgwick County Emergency Communications 911 scanner traffic.

The driver of the vehicle, 35-year-old Joseph McCartney of Wichita, died at the scene.
