The 30-year-old Wichita man whose body was found Jan. 10 in Lake Afton is determined to have drowned, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday based on information from an autopsy.

Ian Alexander Shelton’s death is being ruled an accident.

“Based on those findings, the cause of death was determined to be drowning, and the manner of death was ruled an accident,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “The autopsy did not identify any injuries or anatomic abnormalities. Full toxicology results remain pending.”

The investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.

Shelton was last seen at the lake early in the morning on Dec. 3. A 10-day search was coordinated, and family members, friends and strangers continued the search into the new year.

Around 2:09 p.m. on Jan. 10, a person visiting the lake reported seeing a body, later confirmed to be Shelton, about 25 yards offshore near the southeast corner of the lake.
