The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has identified 27-year-old Deaundre Hill as the man fatally shot and killed by Wichita police early Tuesday morning.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter revealed the man’s name, as well as shared body camera footage and a timeline of events, in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. The Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the man’s shooting death.

Easter said the Wichita Police Department received a 911 call for a disturbance at the Brickstone at Woodlawn apartments just before 1 a.m. on January 20. The caller, Easter described, said they heard a man yelling and a woman crying.

Three police officers responded to the northeast Wichita complex, but Easter said they did not know which apartment the disturbance was at. After knocking on an upstairs apartment door, he said, officers heard what sounded like a disturbance on the first floor of the building.

“Officers hear what sounds like at least two male voices,” Easter said. “One officer knocks and announces ‘Wichita police.’ ”

Body camera footage audio caught one of the males inside the apartment telling someone else to retrieve his gun. The Sheriff said the man made the threat to get his gun and shoot the officers several times.

“The male was also heard saying, ‘Grab my bullets,’” Easter said. “Officers identified themselves as police a total of nine times when they were at the door, the male tells the officers that he will cock the gun and aim it at them, and at another time, says he will shoot them in the brain.”

After that statement was made, body camera footage showed the police officers retreating to a better area of cover. Eleven seconds after they moved from the door, , Easter said Hill — who lived at the residence — exited the apartment while holding a gun.

Officers ordered Hill to drop his weapon four times, Easter said, before firing nine shots at the man, striking him several times. Medical aid was rendered, but Hill died at a hospital at 1:44 a.m.

Easter said a second person at the apartment was interviewed and released. Police did not find any women in the apartment.

The next steps of the investigative process, Easter said, will include conducting multiple interviews, collecting additional evidence and presenting the facts surrounding the shooting to the Sedgwick County District Attorney for review. At that point, the Sheriff said, further updates will come from the District Attorney’s Office.
