Wichita-area hospital announces permanent closure following bankruptcy case
A Derby hospital that recently filed for bankruptcy announced Wednesday that it will close immediately, despite a previous plan to continue operations.
Rock Regional Hospital in Derby filed for bankruptcy Dec. 7, citing between $50 million and $100 million in liabilities, including more than $23 million due in rent payments to the hospital’s landlord.
An initial ruling in federal bankruptcy court on Dec. 10 approved an emergency order that allowed the hospital to continue operations using cash collateral to cover expenses and pay employees. A final hearing was Tuesday.
Wednesday morning, the hospital serving the Wichita suburb and surrounding areas posted on its Facebook it was now permanently closed.
“There is NO emergency care available at this location,” the Facebook post reads, also saying the hospital would share an official press release at a later date.
It is not immediately clear what happened to patients at the hospital as of Tuesday or how many employees could be affected by the closure. The Eagle has reached out to facility officials for comment.
The hospital’s biggest debts were to its landlord, CBC Derby LLC. The hospital owed CBC Derby $23 million in rent payments and was facing eviction.
The emergency order approved in December required the hospital to pay $85,000 in rent payments weekly. That emergency stay has since been lifted, court documents show, meaning CBC Derby LLC can proceed with eviction.
Rock Regional Hospital opened in 2019 and is at 3251 N. Rock Road, across from Derby North Middle School and just north of Field Station: Dinosaurs.
It previously employed around 200 people and was the only hospital in Derby, but also provided service to patients in surrounding areas like Mulvane, Wellington, Winfield, Ark City and Rose Hill. The hospital cost around $40 million to build.
