Three people, including a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy, were injured this morning in what the Sheriff’s Office described as a vicious dog attack in the Oaklawn neighborhood.

Just after 10 a.m., sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported dog attack in the 4600 block of South Hemlock. In a media release, public Information officer Branden Stitt said the incident began when a 69-year-old woman went to visit her son, who lives in the neighborhood. The dogs, which were inside the home, bit her. As she ran from the home, the media release describes, the dogs chased after her and attacked a nearby 18-year-old man.

Stitt wrote that when deputies arrived at the scene, they found 10 to 15 dogs believed to be Boston terriers running loose in the neighborhood.

“There’s a small army of, looks like about a dozen boxers,” a deputy said, according to Sedgwick County Emergency Communications 911 scanner traffic. Scanner traffic is preliminary and subject to change. “ … It looks like some of these dogs do have blood on them.”

As the deputies tried to help the injured teen, the dogs attacked a deputy.

“Two deputies fired their guns to stop the attack and protect the deputy and others,” the news release read. “No people, animals or property were hit by gunfire.”

The 18-year-old was taken to a Wichita hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 69-year-old woman, Stitt said, took a private vehicle to receive treatment for her injuries. The deputy attacked by the dogs reportedly had minor injuries.

The dogs were later contained, Stitt said. Sedgwick County Animal Control, which is leading the investigation into the incident., took custody of the dogs.
