Police seek witnesses for 21st and Maize car crash that critically injured child
Wichita police are urging anyone who saw the two-vehicle crash at 21st Street and Maize Road to come forward after a 7-year-old child was critically injured in the collision.
Public Information Officer Kris Gupilan said the crash happened just before noon on Tuesday when an eastbound gray Toyota Camry struck a minivan as it pulled out of a private drive.
One adult and two 7-year-old children were inside the minivan, Gupilan said. All three were taken to a medical care facility; one child was in critical condition.
The driver of the Camry, Gupilan said, did not sustain any injuries and is speaking with investigators to determine the cause of the crash.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan said there are several sources of video from the northwest Wichita intersection they plan to review. He also said preliminary indications suggest that the crash was preventable.
Ahead of the holiday weekend, he asked drivers to practice patience while on the road and allocate extra travel time.
“We’re about to begin a joyous holiday week. It’s also going to be a peak travel time for people driving. The roads will be very congested,” Sullivan said. “Please bear that in mind. Give yourself ample time to finish your journey so you can drive safely without being rushed. Please use caution, please have patience and consideration of your fellow motorists.”
“Take your time, arrive safely so you can have a beautiful and joyous holiday with family.”
The 21st and Maize intersection has since been reopened.
Witnesses are encouraged to call 316-268-4407 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 with information.
